Design West Debuts on Fifth Avenue South

When Design West decided to move from Mercato to Fifth Avenue South a little over a year ago, they were welcomed with open arms. One of the most highly-acclaimed interior design firms in the country, Design West was preceded by its reputation.

Located at 445 Fifth Avenue South, Suite 200, Design West occupies two floors…one a showroom and the other a design studio where the action takes place and the firm’s formula for success is always in full swing.

It is Design West’s collaborative, client-embraced approach used for decades by CEO Glenn Midnet that makes the firm unique in the industry. Its talented interior designers, architects, cabinet design and construction experts, and lighting designers, among other specialties, work as a creative collective. Clients are never served by just an interior designer; they are assigned a team, based on each client’s needs, taste, personality and lifestyle. The team then collaborates with a network of thousands of vendors and artisans to create custom interiors for discerning clients. Glenn likes to say, “At the heart of our process is the maxim E pluribus unum–out of many, one."

Glenn founded Design West in the early 80s in Fort Myers. At the time, he worked with clients from Captiva to Marco, as Naples was just beginning to expand. In 1994, he built a showroom near Pelican Bay, then another near Tiburon and in 2010 opened a Mercato location. Today, the Fifth Avenue South presence is emblematic of what he and his team have achieved: the go to choice for clients needing help with interior designs, renovations, high-end custom cabinetry, or model merchandising for other companies.

Regardless of a client’s needs, Design West always starts the process with an in-depth, complimentary Design Profile. “The purpose of this is to learn what our client wants and expects. We want the space to tell their story. After the profile is in place, we create the vision from this roadmap. The outcome is sophisticated, uniquely current, and entirely theirs,” says Glenn.

The company has grown substantially since its inception. “We started with me and an assistant and now have 48 employees,” Glenn notes. “We have some of the best and brightest in the business, all recruited from top universities in the country. Over the years, I have fostered relationships with professors and department heads who steered their outstanding students my way, and I offered them internships with Design West. I’m always proud to tell people that three of my vice presidents have each been with me 20 or more years.”

Design West’s work has been featured in dozens of magazines and newspapers from local publications like Naples Illustrated and Gulfshore Business to national ones like Forbes, Good Housekeeping, and Architectural Digest.

While Glenn holds a business administration degree, his passion is interior design, and he is a Professional Member of the Interior Design Society. “I believe my business background allowed me to put a system in place that assures our clients consistency, attention to detail and an overall luxury design experience, but it’s my artistic side that has brought the success Design West enjoys today,” he says.

While the firm has won dozens of awards over the years, Glenn says, “The biggest reward is having a happy client who tells others about our work.”

Glenn’s creative side has carried over into his philanthropic work as well. He invented a furniture line that displays the cancer ribbon symbol in honor of his mother, who died from breast cancer, and as a way of creating awareness about the disease. His has sold thousands of pieces and donated the proceeds to the American Cancer Society.
